ChatGPT: Inflection Point for AI

While machine learning and AI have been around for decades, the public debut of OpenAI's ChatGPT in November 2022 marked the beginning of a new era. ChatGPT became a cultural phenomenon almost overnight, reaching 100 million users in two months, faster than any previous technology (until Meta’s Threads).

Google’s Response: Code Red

The rise of ChatGPT, combined with Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI, triggered alarm at Google. The company went into “code red” mode. In May 2023, Google responded with the Search Generative Experience (SGE), which integrates AI-generated overviews into search results.
