How can we reconcile search volume growth with survey data that clearly shows consumer behavior is changing?

In a self-promotional blog post in early March, Google dropped this little nugget: "We already see more than 5 trillion searches on Google annually." Buried near the bottom, the statement was intended to seem nonchalant. But it was very purposeful and quickly disseminated by search-industry news outlets.
