You might not think AI has much to do with local dentistry. But as Neal Polachek discovered in a new local business interview, AI is driving technology change in the profession.

The US dental industry is projected to generate $200 billion in revenue this year, growing at a CAGR of 3.3%. Globally, the industry is worth $450 billion and may reach $600 billion by 2030. There are approximately 200,000 licensed dentists in the US and 1.5 - 2.0 million internationally.

Neal spoke with Dr. Cooper Differding ("Dr. Coop") about how AI is helping improve dental office administration, diagnostics and patient education. There are also ethical issues that the two talked about.

Administrative Efficiency:

  • SaaS practice management systems like Dentrix Ascend streamline patient reminders, communication and recall management.
  • These systems help reduce missed appointments and free up time for staff to focus on patient care.

Improved Diagnostics:

  • AI enhances diagnostic capabilities, such as detecting cavities early through digital imagery.
  • Real-time collaboration among specialists is facilitated by AI, improving treatment planning and outcomes.

Patient Education:

  • AI tools assist in patient education by enhancing images to help patients understand their conditions better.
  • This has the potential to trust and create better-informed patients.
